Day 11: Favorite Mech Anime

My favorite mech anime is Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. I’m almost done with the show! I’m currently in the middle of the R2 season. In general, I normally don’t watch mech titles but some of my guy friends recommended it to me. Also, who doesn’t love the shameless Pizza Hut sponsorship? C2 literally doesn’t eat anything else besides Pizza Hut pizza. The show is dramatic and exciting. I also love the animation – Clamp did a great job creating such beautiful characters. I can’t think of an ugly character on the show.

Lelouch Lamperouge is a complex young man. He wants to overthrow the Britannian government and create a new, peaceful world for his little sister Nonnelly. She keeps him sane throughout the show otherwise he’s likely to go off the deep end. The setting takes place in a vague time period where Japan was overthrown by the Britannian government. The Japanese people are now referred to as “Elevens” because they live in Area 11. They lost their culture and identity because of this war.

Many Elevens hold grudges against Britannians. This is the heart of the show. This is where hatred stems from. Britannians are often cruel, heartless and careless with how they treat Elevens. The main Britannian who stands out from the others is Princess Euphemia li Britannia. She serves as sub-viceroy for Area 11. So, what is Geass, exactly? It’s a mysterious power granted to Lelouch by a woman named C2. Lelouch is able to make eye contact with a person and command them to do a particular action. This is only the beginning.

As a random note, my least favorite character is Nina Einstein. She’s a racist Britannian who is legitimately afraid of Elevens for no good reason. She’s also whiny and annoying. I don’t want to say too much else just in case of spoilers. Getting to the mech part: they’re called nightmares and there are a lot of great battle scenes. Fighting is an ever-present part of the show because of the dangerous climate they live in.

I also enjoy the relationship that develops between Euphemia and Suzaku. There are a lot of cute moments that happen in the show. They are idealists who want everyone to get along. Suzaku is Lelouch’s best friend which is a conflict of interest. Suzaku is an honorary Britannian soldier while Lelouch is fighting alongside the Japanese as “Zero”, a masked hero fighting for justice. Things get pretty complicated between the duo. There’s never a dull moment when you watch Code Geass!

  1. I really enjoyed Code Geass. I know some parts of it are a bit over the top and silly, but it was just such good fun to watch and I quite liked most of the characters. It also manages some real moments of great drama. Plus, the end of season 2 is amazing.
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. There definitely can be, I really enjoyed that there was such a wide range of characters. I’m thinking of the school festival when they were trying to make the giant pizza. I feel like the plot moves things along well. I especially like Nunnally, I feel like she keeps Lelouch grounded throughout the show. Thank you for reading my post, Karandi! I appreciate it 🙂
